FAQ: How to select the proper charger for LiFePO4 cells?

It is important to not overcharge the LiFePO4 cells. One of the ways of overcharging is maintaining the cell voltage at full charge level for long period of time, even after the charging is completed.  Some chargers on the market keep the final charge voltage constant at the full level. This is behavior is not good for LiFePO4 cells. The above graph shows an example of this kind of constant charging that needs to be avoided.

What to do if you have this kind of charger?  Well, even this kind of charger can be used for charging of the LIFePO4 cells, but the charger must be disconnected (or the charging terminated) when the full charge level is reached. So it either requires a constant supervision or making some alarm signal or monitoring device to disconnect this type of charger from the pack.

If left unattended this kind of charger will over charge the cells and damage them – see voiding the warranty claims for the LiFePO4 cells.

Note: the long time balancing may also lead to damage by overcharging.
