Toxic gases released from a LFP cell
Question: Are there any dangerous or toxic gases released from a LiFePO4 battery during a regular operation?
Answer: No. The LiFePO4 technology does not release any dangerous or toxic gases during the charging or discharging process. This is the difference from other battery technology (for example lead-acid). Lithium batteries are fully sealed and do not have any holes or openings to release any gas or liquid.
However, in case of improper use, typically because of the over heating (or because of the over charge) the cells may get beyond the proper operation limits and in such situation the internal chemicals of the cell may start melting and release some gasses or liquids. These gases may be toxic, corrosive and hazardous. For safety reasons the cells should be always operated in rooms that allow proper and easy ventilation.
