The slide shows two common situation that exist with large capacity battery packs. Both of them are related to the overheating of the cells. The overheating of the cells causes increased aging and degradation of the performance. The different temperatures of the battery pack cause additional issues related to the charging and balancing of such a unequally heated battery pack.
Cooling by air flow
This issue exists in moving applications (motorbikes, EV systems, electric buses). The battery packed is cooled by the airflow from one side. The wind facing front part is cooled or even over-cooled, while the rear part remains overheated. The same issue exists in systems with forced ventilation where the cooling air enters form one side and leaves at the other side.
No cooling
This is the issue with stationary systems (energy storage cabinets, container storage solutions, large battery banks). The cells that are inside, in the core, are surrounded by other cells that keep heating the internal core.
The solution
The solution for both situations is taking the cooling and heating issue into the consideration and taking measure to let the cells ventilate properly, not accumulating heat. Solution is easy: the cell distancing and vertical air-flow brings equal temperatures for all cells.
