Question: I have installed 5 solar panels with MicroInverters. They produce about 1000W during the daily sunshine hours. My computer servers take about 1050 Watts. I was hoping to reduce my electricity consumption to some 50 Watts. But after some tests I found out that my utility meter is billing 2 kWh per 1 hour. Something is wrong. Why is this so?

Answer: Most installations in Europe have 3 phase wiring. This means the various parts of the electric wiring in the building are connected to a different phase. For your GridFree installation it is necessary to have the production (solar panels with MicroInverters) and the consumption connected on the same phase (wiring section).

If the connection is not on the same phase, the unused energy from the MicroInverters will flow through the meter to the grid on one phase and the consumption of your equipment will be on a different phase. As a result, the total energy (no matter of the direction of the flow) will be measured by your meter. Thus you will be billed both for what you produce on one phase and also for what you consume on the other phase.

Remember: the production and consumption must be on the same phase!

In order to benefit from the GridFree self energy generation, we suggest to connect most of the equipment with continuous consumption on the wiring of the same phase.
