Lead acid batteries – a cheap solution for some customers

GWL focuses on the safety high performance Lithium cells – LFP and also LTO. What if a customer needs a cheap and quick-to-go solution with no demand for a high performance?

In such a case the ordinary lead-acid batteries will work too. Perhaps, if you have a small installation in a cottage and you wish to add a battery system for an off-grid setup, the lead batteries will work.

The photo shows the product range of the regular (automotive) lead-acid batteries as available in the “Bauhaus” hobby-market in Prague in January 2022.

It seems that the 12V/44AH is the best price/capacity ratio: with the price of CZK 1390, the price is USD is approx. $63. When counting that the 12V battery — with 6 cells of 2V— corresponds to 4 cells of LFP, the price per cell and Ah is approximately $0.36/Ah. (4 x 44Ah x $0.36  ~~ $63)

The other batteries with 12V/55Ah, 62Ah, 72Ah at price of CZK 1990 ($90), CZK 2159 ($98), CZK 2559 ($116) correspond to the price of $0.40/Ah on the single cell calculation. (Prices on the photos are including VAT 21% for Czech)

With the retail price of the LFP cells now being around $0.70/Ah ~ $.80/Ah, these automotive lead acid batteries seem to be “half the price” of the LFP cells. 

For a knowledgeable user, it is obvious that the performance of the lead acid batteries is much worse than that of the LFP cells, so this price-only comparison does not make much sense.

If you need to charge regularly, if you wish to have a long-time power source, if you wish to make your battery as an investment, your option is clear: only LFP cells will make a quality solution for such types of applications.
