Making the best fire-protection of the battery pack

Question: I plan to install my small energy setup into a plastic box.  Is it a good idea?

GWL/Team suggests to make the installation always into a fire-resistant material. You may have the pack mounted in a plastic box, but the questions are: Where will your whole installation be located? How will it be – as a whole – protected against the risk of fire?

GWL/Teams always suggests to make the installation inside a separately ventilated room or compartment in a room, that has protection against the spread of fire. The best protection if by means of fire-resistant hardened boards.

The LFP batteries usually do not burn, and the fire is caused rather by short circuit, malfunction of the electronics or by the burning of the insulation or the plastic materials. There are also heat resistant adhesives and foams that should be used to fill-in any spaces or holes of your installation.

If your installation is fully closed, with no entry for a fresh air with oxygen, if it is stored in a fire resistant cabinet from hardened fire-resistant boards, you have done all that you could to protect yourself against the risk of fire.

Hint: we suggest to equip your installation with the fire / smoke and over-temperature detector, ideally a model with an auxiliary contact to trigger a remote alarm in a case of emergency.
